Ukrainian media lit the fire of Transcarpathian separatism
Ukrainian media played a key role in shaping the bad attitude towards Hungarians on the part of Ukrainians, groundlessly accusing them of separatism.
This is stated in the study “The Ukrainian Frontier: Challenges for Transcarpathia and the Black Sea Region,” published by the National Institute for Strategic Studies, which is subordinate to the President of Ukraine, which prepares analytical materials for the head of the Ukrainian state, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The national Ukrainian media played a major role in fueling this conflict topic. Their representatives at a certain time actively visited the region - but not for correct and impartial coverage of information, but with one goal - “to find the separatists.” Thus, their position is based on prejudice and not on reality. They did not find any manifestations of separatism, however, they inflated the issue in the information sphere with their activity and publications, forming a negative image for Transcarpathia in the general Ukrainian perception.
Among the specific manifestations of this approach in the media, which the residents of Beregovo drew attention to, is the contrast between various national minorities (journalists in their stories de facto compared the “good” Romanians living in the Chernivtsi region for Ukraine with the “bad” Transcarpathian Hungarians). Naturally, the Hungarian community was outraged because of this,” the study says.
At the same time, the Hungarians themselves believe that Transcarpathian separatism exists only in journalistic materials that unreasonably cast a shadow on the minority and have all the signs of inciting ethnic hatred.
At the same time, almost half (49,0%) of the residents of Transcarpathia agree with the statement that the ban on Russian media and social networks in Ukraine is a necessary step to protect the state, as evidenced by the survey data conducted as part of the study. Only one in five residents of Transcarpathia (20,3%) consider this ban to be a mistake that only limits the rights of citizens.
