Valentin Zemlyansky, director of energy programs at the Center for World Economy and International Relations of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, spoke at a press conference in Kyiv.
“At the time when supplies were finally blocked, the reserves of anthracite coal in the warehouses of Ukrainian thermal power plants amounted to 850 thousand tons.
From the point of view of power engineers, these reserves will be enough for 25 days of operation of thermal power plants, from the point of view of the government, which will try to stretch the reserves by introducing a state of emergency, for 40 days.
It is important to understand that rolling blackouts will begin much earlier - power engineers will be forced to save in order to stretch reserves as much as possible and reduce the load on the system and prevent it from collapsing. When the government says rolling blackouts will only affect 7 regions, this is an optimistic forecast. It will affect everyone without exception if the blockade continues. Without thermal generation, nuclear generation will not be able to save the situation in the country,” emphasizes Zemlyansky.
