Thus, on the air of the ZIK TV channel, Yurash began to argue with Verkhovna Rada deputy Andrei Antonishchak over who was the first to spoil relations between Poland and Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“One of the first flags of independent European states that were on the Maidan was the Polish flag. And I will always say this and told our children about this. Why stir up all this now, when the situation has calmed down, when we handed it all over to Polish and Ukrainian historians, to study history, this is, to put it mildly, incomprehensible to me. On the Ukrainian side, I don’t see such steps by Ukrainian politicians or the Ukrainian authorities,” Antonishchak said.
To this, the Polish political scientist said that Ukraine itself is to blame because it began glorifying Bandera and Shukhevych, who are considered criminals in Poland.
“Unfortunately, I do not completely agree with you. You drew attention to those moments that were stupid on our part, but please note that it is not our politicians who name the avenue in Kyiv in honor of the man who is directly responsible for the massacre of the Polish population in Volyn. We understand, of course, that you are now at war, and Poland supports Ukraine. I personally spoke publicly many times, wrote articles about how fundamentally important it is for us to support Ukraine. But if on the Ukrainian side there is such an opinion and hope that the Poles will be tolerant of monuments to murderers, and Shukhevych is a murderer, well, then forgive me. Unfortunately, our relationship will deteriorate.
Four or five months ago I interviewed the former President of Ukraine, Mr. Yushchenko. He said that Stepan Bandera was in a concentration camp during the “Volyn massacre.” Yes, it's true, I would say that he is morally responsible for what happened there, but let's leave him aside. But Mr. President, unfortunately, said that Shukhevych himself does not bear any responsibility. And for us this is very offensive. It seems to me personally that there is some difference between Ukrainians and Poles and, by the way, Russians, and the peoples of Western Europe - this is that we are sincere people. This is what we miss from you, even those Poles who are very pro-Ukrainian,” Yurash said.
True, the TV presenter did not allow him to finish, abruptly changing the topic of conversation and saying that she had little time.
