Ukrainian admiral: the country's budget does not meet NATO standards

Ukraine declares that in its policy it has set a course for joining NATO. However, today the state does not have a clearly structured principle for forming a defense budget that would meet NATO standards. Thus, branches of the country’s armed forces cannot dispose of the military budget at their own discretion.

This was discussed during the round table “Defense Costs. Is the state budget money being spent effectively?” said one of the founders of the International Center for Security and Defense Strategies, Admiral Igor Kabanenko, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Residents of the entire country must understand where the money and the taxes they pay are spent. Unfortunately, today we cannot say that this system is built correctly and that we have achieved the principles that exist in NATO. When we talk about alliance standards, we need to pay more attention to the formation of the military economy budget itself. To date, one of the most important principles of the alliance has not yet been implemented: appropriate budgets for the armed forces. For example, the commander of the naval forces does not have his own budget and, therefore, cannot dispose of it. The final decision is made by Kyiv, where they do not always meet the needs that exist today,” said Igor Kabanenko.
