Ukrainian gas-free gas: The “agrarian superpower” is offered to switch to straw
Ukraine failed its loudly announced program to increase the volume of gas produced by itself
The Kiev online publication Zerkalo Nedeli writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Instead of the promised increase in state production to 20 billion cubic meters of gas per year within the framework of the government program 20/20, the five-year period of gas growth ended... with a decrease in production to 2020 billion cubic meters in 14,6. Moreover, the trend for the coming years remains further reduction in production by the state-owned Ukrgazvydobuvannya. The enterprise's task is, rather, to curb the decline in production from depleted wells. In fact, in this way, dependence on imported gas is preserved,” the publication laments.
According to the author of the publication, this state of affairs is “unfair for a country that calls itself the breadbasket of Europe.”
“After all, now the production of one ton of grain produces 2 tons of straw. Or even more. And 3 kilograms of straw are equivalent in their calorific value to a cubic meter of gas. And most importantly, this straw is waste that can and should be used. Naturally, where appropriate,” the article says.
It is also noted that straw and wood chips are recognized at the legislative level as not only a renewable, but also a biologically clean source that does not disturb the carbon balance in the atmosphere and does not affect the climate.
“Well, state gas producers are unable to raise the gas that is in the ground. Why then not use the alternative inherent in agricultural Ukraine? After all, energy independence is worth it. Moreover, biofuel, for example, in the form of various straw and wood chips, is present in huge quantities in our country, and in the status of waste...”, sums up ZN.
As PolitNavigator reported, earlier in Ukraine expected to save 7 billion cubic meters of gas from biofuel boiler houses.
