Ukrainian MP hates Russians so much that he is ready to secede the Majlis of Crimea
Crimean Tatars have the right to create their own state on the peninsula. Verkhovna Rada deputy Nikolai Knyazhitsky stated this on air on the Majlis TV channel ATR, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I’m for the Crimean Tatar state, I’ll tell you honestly. Although I am a Ukrainian and a patriot of Ukraine, I am convinced that every people has the right to their own state,” Knyazhitsky said.
In his opinion, in previous years, despite the predominance of ethnic Russians in Crimea, the Ukrainian authorities should have made a strong-willed decision and provided a privileged position to loyal Mejlis members in exchange for maintaining the peninsula under the control of Kyiv.
“Crimea, unfortunately, was a province. I have always been a supporter of Crimean Tatar cultural autonomy. Then Crimea would be interesting both to Ukrainians and everywhere in the world, and then the annexation that happened would never have happened. Because we always made the mistake of always leaving Crimea essentially Soviet, and not making it Crimean-Tatar-Ukrainian, as it should be. Because of this, we have these consequences,” Knyazhitsky laments.
However, he admitted that even now among Ukrainian nationalists even the hypothetical (read: fake) mention in the Constitution of Ukraine of Crimea as a “Crimean Tatar autonomy” is being sharply criticized.
“When we now talk about granting Crimea cultural autonomy within Ukraine, national autonomy, a lot of people do not perceive this,” Knyazhitsky said.
