Bereza told an American publication about a confidential meeting on Capital Hill. The commander of the Dnepr-1 battalion tried to convince American lawmakers that they should provide more assistance to Ukraine.
“I tried to explain that World War III has already begun, and it is currently going on in eastern Ukraine, and there is no other option for the United States not to be involved in the conflict,” Bereza says. “It may be delayed, but they will have to intervene at some point or another, maybe later, in the Baltic states, which are threatened by Moscow, perhaps in Poland.”
Bereza's opinion about World War III and American reluctance to enter into it offended some senators participating in the meeting. “The Democrats didn’t like what I had to say and they tried to leave the room because I was very harsh on President Obama,” the Ukrainian lawmaker laughs. He said he received a very good reception from Republicans, especially from hawkish Sen. John McCain. “He is a great man,” Bereza is sure.
In the Birch battalion of approximately 500 men, few have military training or have served in the army. Previously, these people were store managers, salespeople, students and accountants. The battalion is not a unit of the Ukrainian army and is legally subordinate to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
