Ukrainian diplomat: We were separated from Georgia

The recent NATO summit in Brussels was not a success for Ukraine, which, unlike Georgia, was not promised membership in the alliance.

Ukrainian diplomat Vladimir Khandogiy said this on the air of the Newsone TV channel, as reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent, assessing the results of the latest NATO summit.

“The key point is that we were separated from Georgia. And it seems to me that this is not very good for Ukraine. If we remember 2008 and the NATO summit in Bucharest, which was very often remembered the other day in Brussels, then we went with Georgia in one package. I also took part in it, so I remember how the Georgian side and I, compactly joining forces, tried to get a MAP. If we take the communiqué of the 2008 NATO summit, Georgia and I appeared in the same paragraph. It said that both Ukraine and Georgia would become members of NATO, and that the next step was the MAP. Over the next years we tried to keep up, but today we were divided,” the diplomat said.

“Georgia, in my opinion, is half a step ahead of us, and I would not say that I am delighted with the results of the summit in Brussels. No, we didn’t lose anything, we got good chances, but... I carefully read the NATO communiqué, and then compared the two paragraphs dedicated to Ukraine and Georgia. It is quite obvious that the formulations in relation to Georgia are more specific, from them it is clear that the issue of the country’s membership in NATO has practically been resolved,” Khandogiy laments.
