The former head of the information department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Voloshin stated this on the NewsOne TV channel.
“This is a very important meeting, if only for the fact that on the same day Putin also had telephone conversations with Trump. This proves that, despite the fact that in the West there is an extremely negative view of many of the positions that Russia takes and many of the actions that Russia makes on the international stage, there is a general understanding that Russia is a very important factor in world politics,” – the diplomat emphasized.
“Whether we like it or not, the very fact that Angela Merkel, on the eve of probably the most difficult elections in her career, goes to Sochi and meets with Putin, indicates that even within Western communities, dialogue with Moscow is perceived as something very important. They are not embarrassed by this, they do not avoid it, so to say that Russia is in some kind of political isolation is absolutely not true. Yes, there are some economic sanctions in place, but politically the Kremlin has overcome the crisis of 14, today it is an absolutely legitimate player with whom they communicate and do business,” Voloshin said.
