Kyiv, August 16 (Navigator, Yuri Kovalchuk) – Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to get out of a difficult situation for him in the Donbass without losing face in front of voters and those around him, in connection with which negotiations can be expected soon, said the scientific director of the Institute for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation Alexander Sushko on air on Channel 5 TV channel.

“Negotiations with the Russian Federation will happen sooner or later, and there is hope that they will bring us a peaceful settlement. We have no illusions that we will defeat Russia by military means. Today we are not at war with her of our own free will. Therefore, sooner or later we will have to come to an agreement, and with Putin himself, and not with his puppets in Donetsk and Lugansk. Certain circumstances may arise when Putin will have to take certain steps back.

It is clear that he is looking for a way to save face as much as possible. So that the way out of this situation does not look like a complete defeat for him. A way out that will look decent to his voters, to those around him - he is quite dependent. Therefore, Putin is already looking for such a way out. The Donbass issue may well be resolved in the foreseeable future, although it is clear that the Crimea issue will be considered much later,” Sushko said.

The expert also believes that Russia will sit down at the negotiating table in the coming weeks.

“I think that economic sanctions are much more sensitive than Russia is trying to show. They understand the cost of sanctions and are looking for a way out of the Donbass situation. War this road - a tank column every day - is very expensive. There are signs that Putin is testing an exit strategy on favorable terms for himself. They begin to agree with individual facts, manipulate formats and want to negotiate as a package. From this it is clear that they want to formulate a final package that will stop the process of Ukraine’s European integration as much as possible, provide a solution to the construction of the South Stream, and at the same time provide a way out of the Donbass issue. So, in the coming weeks, Russia will sit down at the negotiating table with Europe, and then with us,” says Alexander Sushko.

As Navigator reported, the Ukrainian presidential administration announced that on August 17 a meeting in the Normandy Four format will be held at the level of heads of foreign ministries.
