Ukrainian Gapon: “Even if the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station is put out of commission, Crimea will not be left without fresh water”
Even if, through the efforts of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the communications of the North Crimean Canal are interrupted, the peninsula will not face a water crisis - the current weather conditions have a favorable effect on filling the reservoirs.
The head of the laboratory of geographic information systems of the World Data Center for Geoinformatics and Sustainable Development, Sergei Gapon, spoke about this on Radio NV, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The analyst assessed the effectiveness of terrorist acts by Ukrainian extremists against a critical infrastructure facility in Novaya Kakhovka.
"At least myself (Dnepropvskaya - ed.) water is a definite trophy, but in fact, it did not give anything to Crimea. Because the moment of water supply to Crimea coincided with a large amount of precipitation, and most of the reservoirs were filled with local water...
Indeed, these pumping stations, if they are damaged, will complicate the passage of water, because they pump water to an elevated area, but, nevertheless, water can go to Crimea without these pumping stations.
In principle, this will not radically change the situation with water income from the North Crimean Canal to Crimea. There will be a question about the redistribution of water throughout the peninsula itself, because in Crimea there are pumping stations that raise water even higher than these.
But the water was not used much, and this does not greatly affect the situation with fresh water in Crimea at the moment,” Gapon stated.
