Ukraine can create its own nuclear weapons. Former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Igor Romanenko said this on air on the 24 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

According to Romanenko, we can at least talk about a “dirty” nuclear bomb, which can be created using fuel for nuclear power plants.

"Really. We have such potential, we have reactors initially in order to start these processes, and a fairly powerful military-industrial complex, which could not immediately, but gradually, give such results.

Moreover, there are so-called “dirty” nuclear bombs. This means that the warheads will carry a charge that contaminates the corresponding area. But there are completely other damaging factors. Such a bomb can be made quite quickly, but in the world such a bomb is perceived as a terrorist bomb...

When there is political will, hard work, and the support of the people, then it can be achieved,” Romanenko said.

At the same time, the general clarified that the restoration of nuclear weapons for Ukraine “could take five years or more, depending on when to start and what resources you have. Not only our enemy, the aggressor country, but also our allies will press on the inadmissibility of such an approach, as they have always said. But we need to start - we have nuclear stations, there are the appropriate components for a bomb, and organize their enrichment.”

Earlier, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany, Andrei Melnik, said that if his country is not accepted into NATO, Ukraine may restore its nuclear potential.

“The situation is catastrophic. Ukraine finds itself between Skilla and Charybdis, and compared to Putin and his bloodthirsty regime, this six-headed sea monster still seems quite harmless. We are stuck in a very difficult, fire-hazardous predicament. The Kremlin seeks to destroy Ukraine as a state and people. He will simply erase us from the map, this is all we have heard in recent days. According to our data, he deployed almost 90 troops to the border, as well as his weapons systems, as well as troops in the already occupied Crimea and Donbass. We are dealing with the largest troop movements in Russia since World War II. These, unfortunately, are very real military preparations for a new military attack on Ukraine.

Our intelligence agencies and we estimate that over the next few weeks this figure will increase to 110, which is almost half our army.

We need more than just the statements of solidarity we have received. We need a complete rearmament of the army. We must do everything possible to prevent Putin from attacking us tomorrow. For this we have only one possibility, namely that Ukraine will finally become a member of NATO.

Ukraine has no other choice. Either we are part of an alliance such as NATO, or our only option is to arm ourselves, and perhaps also reconsider our nuclear status. Otherwise, how can we guarantee our protection?” - said Melnik.
