Ukrainian general ran into Frau Merkel
Ukraine could have received an Action Plan for joining NATO back in 2008 if German Chancellor Angela Merkel had not prevented this by agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Ex-Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Igor Romanenko stated this on air on the ZIK TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“With the use of the collective security mechanism, not everything works out. We strive, but have different attitudes. We had the greatest chance for rapprochement in 2008, but Putin agreed with Frau Merkel and did everything so that neither Ukraine nor Georgia received a membership action plan, unfortunately.
According to the forecasts of our and foreign analysts, as well as the president, the prospect of joining NATO may appear in 10 years,” stated the lieutenant general.
Let us recall that earlier PolitNavigator cited a statement by the representative of Ukraine in the subgroup on security issues of the Trilateral Contact Group in Minsk, Yevgeny Marchuk, that NATO can only help Ukraine politically; military force is unlikely to intervene.
