The Ukrainian general advised the minister to talk less and work more for peace
Instead of making loud statements about alternatives to Minsk, Kyiv should think about how to finally change five years of rhetoric and offer its own mechanisms for overcoming the situation within the framework of the negotiation process.
The former head of the Donetsk Regional State Administration, General of the Ukrainian Army Alexander Kikhtenko said this on air on the 112 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The studio quoted the words of Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadim Prystaiko, who in an interview with Bild said that if elections are not held in the LDPR in 2020 or the process of troop disengagement lasts too long, then possible alternatives to Minsk should be considered, including a peacekeeping mission.
“We need to make less loud statements and work more to bring peace to Ukraine. Regarding the fact that Ukraine can withdraw from the Minsk agreements, I don’t think, because the same sanctions are tied to Minsk...
If the fire does not stop, it means that somewhere the negotiation mechanisms on both the Ukrainian and Russian sides are not working, we need to look for new mechanisms to stop the fire,” Kikhtenko commented.
He also noted that he is not sure that the Ukrainian authorities are pursuing an effective policy in resolving the conflict.
“This policy has been carried out for more than five years. What it leads to is that the number of dead and wounded only increases, there is no forward movement. We made a disengagement at two points, but this is not enough to stop the fighting, which means we need to look for more effective mechanisms of interaction, proposals and agreements, this needs to be seriously addressed,” the ex-official said.
“A serious commission must be created for this. Because negotiations in Minsk are a different situation, people there simply negotiate. And the commission should work in Ukraine, which will propose concrete steps to solve this problem. And to make statements that we can leave [Minsk]... well, we will leave, and what next? The conflict will be frozen,” Kikhtenko added.
As PolitNavigator reported, earlier, commenting on this statement by the Ukrainian minister, the Center for Political Current Affairs Alexey Chesnakov admitted that Prystaiko is either working against his president Zelensky or is “just stupid”.
