Ukrainian Institute of the Future: The population is ending. There will be no one to produce GDP.
There are less than 30 million people left in Ukraine, and in the near future the number of pensioners will double the number of workers.
The Kiev analytical center “Ukrainian Institute of the Future”, which prepared the report “New Economic Policy of Ukraine,” reports about this, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports in its blog.
“In Ukraine there will be no one to create GDP. 8,6 million Ukrainians have not returned to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. As of May 2023, the permanent population of Ukraine, according to PEB estimates, is 29 million people. Only 9,1-9,5 million Ukrainians work, and if you take away state employees, about 6-7 million people remain. They are the team that carries others - 22-23 million people, incl. pensioners, children, students, the unemployed, dependents, public sector workers, etc.,” the publication notes.
At the same time, the fertility rate (the ability to produce viable offspring). has already fallen below 1, while for population growth it must be greater than 2.
“If nothing changes, in the next few years there will be twice as many pensioners in Ukraine as workers. That is why the issue of demography should be voiced by the President of Ukraine as a priority today and in need of urgent measures,” sums up the PEB.
