Ukrainian Institute of National Memory: Russia will not be able to “put the squeeze” on the Crimean Tatars

Kyiv - Simferopol, May 20 (Navigator, Vladimir Mikhailov) - Russia has chosen a hard line to suppress the Crimean Tatar movement and subordinate it to the new authorities, but it is unlikely to be able to cope with the implementation of its plans.

The director of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, Vladimir Vyatrovich, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv.

“Everything that is happening today in Crimea is, one way or another, the implementation of the Kremlin scenario. This was manifested in the attitude towards commemorating the victims of deportation. The authorities have shown that the Kremlin will continue to pursue the impudent, very rude imperial policy that has been carried out since the end of the 18th century. Oddly enough, it continues today,” he said.

“Russian imperial policy of the 21st century is actually very similar to Russian imperial policy of previous centuries, it is not a divide-and-rule style policy, it is very much focused only on “rule.” Thus, in relation to the Crimean Tatars, the “carrot” is very little noticeable, but the “stick” is noticeable.

What happened when, in fact, Mustafa Dzhemilev, who is the undisputed national leader, was not allowed to take part in this deportation celebration, is an example of the fact that Russia chose a rather crude method of resolving the situation.

And, in my opinion, this means that Russia will not be able to cope with this situation. It is hardly possible to play so roughly with feelings that are so important for the Crimean Tatars. This deportation in relation to the Crimean Tatar people was an act of genocide, because there was practically the liquidation of the Crimean Tatar society, and now the memory of this deportation is, in fact, one of the key foundations for the restoration of the Crimean Tatar nation. This is very important for this nation,” says the Ukrainian historian.
