The Ukrainian Energy Minister wants to buy coal in France, where it has not been mined since 2004
Kyiv, December 16 (PolitNavigator, Alexander Semenyuta) – The recently appointed Minister of Energy Vladimir Demchishin never ceases to amaze. According to his latest interview UNIAN, French GDF Suez wants to supply coal to Ukraine. However, the company does not conduct coal mining activities at all, and the last mine in France closed on April 23, 2004.

As you know, more than half of the power units at thermal power plants in Ukraine are idle due to an acute shortage of coal. The contract for the supply of fuel from South Africa was disrupted due to a corruption scandal.
Demchishin does not disclose what kind of coal and where it will be supplied to Ukraine from: “The question is about commercial conditions. … Companies like Gaz de France can help. They understand the market, they are a big player, and through their portfolio they can influence suppliers and optimize logistics.”
At the same time, it remains unclear why the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine has not begun official negotiations with the leaders in global coal production, companies such as BHP. They have the necessary resource base and, with timely payment, are ready to supply up to 0,5 million tons of coal per month, which corresponds to the throughput capacity of Ukrainian seaports.
