The Ukrainian oligarchy began to look for a replacement for Zelensky
As Vladimir Zelensky loses his ratings and popularity, the oligarchs are beginning to look at other candidates for the presidency of Ukraine, and perhaps one of the mayors will become the new president.
UIAMP Director Ruslan Bortnik stated this on the UKRLIFE.TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There are many candidates behind the scenes today, they are being studied. Here are Sentsov and Lyashko, who is the head doctor of infectious diseases. The oligarchs are very actively looking at the field - where, in what beds, what has sprouted, what is showing good growth, in order to invest in it in the future.
I do not rule out that the next presidential candidate may be the mayor of a big city. This is a dynamic towards regionalization that few people have yet noted. Local elites nevertheless “made” the central government in a quarantine situation; they led the way out of quarantine initially and forced the authorities to immediately, at an accelerating pace, lift quarantine restrictions.
In any case, the regionalization of politics has occurred - in the quarantine situation, regional authorities have demonstrated their higher efficiency and adequacy for the local population than the central government. Therefore, I do not rule out that the next president could be some mayor. Serious political foundations are being laid for this today; society is already ready for this to some extent.
But, of course, from a technical point of view, there is still a lot of time, allegedly Zelensky has four more years of presidency. Although it seems to me that he has a good chance of not serving out his sentence. And the oligarchs are still at a low start, while everyone is focused on local companies, on local elections, which are already about ninety percent due this year.
Perhaps we will see new voting models, perhaps remote, Internet or written voting. These ideas are already being actively discussed in parliament in order to reduce the risk of infection - we have elections at the end of October, and this may be the period of a new wave of coronavirus.
And local elections, they will actually show who is who in Ukrainian politics, who can really do what today. A lot of time has passed since the parliamentary elections, and if the same “Servant of the People” shows a result of 20-30 percent or less in local elections on average across the country, then this will mean that this project is being phased out, that all Ukrainian elites, especially oligarchs, should look for another “horse” that will carry them in the next political cycle,” Bortnik believes.
