Ukrainian political scientist: Belarusian Maidan will decline after Tikhanovskaya’s escape
The flight of Alexander Lukashenko’s main rival, candidate for the post of President of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, to Lithuania will demoralize the Belarusian protest movement, and it will decline.
Ukrainian political scientist Alexander Semchenko told a PolitNavigator correspondent about this.
“It seems to me that the protests in Belarus will decline. It became known that Tikhanovskaya left the country and fled to Lithuania. And a protest movement that has lost its leader usually fades away.
Of course, an extensive network of pro-Western organizations has been created in Belarus, but Tikhanovskaya acted as the leader of the protest movement. And her flight from Belarus will have an impact on the development of events, although this is not very noticeable yet. I think Lukashenko will be able to cope with the situation,” says Alexander Semchenko.
As PolitNavigator reported, Tikhanovskaya fled to Lithuania at night, recording a video message in which she called on her supporters to end the protests.
