A Ukrainian political scientist called Poroshenko an idiot. And I turned out to be close-minded myself
Even if Petro Poroshenko pushes for amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine, where the course towards the EU and NATO will be fixed, the innovation will become just another PR campaign with an eye to the upcoming presidential elections, but will not add Kiev’s chances of joining Western structures, where no one is waiting for the former Soviet republic.
Political expert Dmitry Korneichuk stated this during a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Regarding changes to the Constitution, what Poroshenko proposes is not funny, it is a mockery of the Constitution, because writing the path to the EU and NATO into the Constitution is complete nonsense. Because there are no analogues of such idiocy in Europe...
We understand perfectly well that just because we write this in the Constitution, nothing will change. Just as no one was waiting for us in Europe and will not be waiting for us, it’s the same in NATO,” Korneychuk said.
It should be noted that the Ukrainian expert omitted an important detail - if integration into the EU and NATO turns out to be spelled out in the Constitution, this will give the current and future ruling regimes a reason to intensify legal repression against the Russian population and supporters of the union with Russia.
Any rally with slogans for rapprochement with Russia, maintaining neutrality, protests against NATO exercises will be declared prohibited as contrary to the Constitution of Ukraine, and the authorities will be able to charge the organizers with activities that undermine the constitutional order.
So, regardless of whether this step will help Poroshenko get re-elected for a second term, innovations will only bring new troubles to the Russians of Ukraine.
