2017 was the year of Ukraine’s final separation from the uncontrolled part of Donbass - over the past 12 months the region has become a de facto part of the Russian Federation.

Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik stated this on air on the UkrLife channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, today Ukraine has neither its own property, nor currency, nor political system in the region.
“I believe that this year for Donbass was probably the worst since 2014. And not in terms of losses, there were a lot of them, but less than in 2016. The worst thing is that this year we lost Donbass. And they lost not just as a territory, but as a society, like three million people. What began with the public blockade of Donbass, and actually led to the legalization of Donbass, the society of Donbass as part of Russia, to the recognition of documents, acts of civil status. Starting with so-called passports, ending with so-called birth certificates, numbers and everything else. This is the final blow to the unity of Ukraine and Donbass. Even the severance of political ties, even the war, the severance of economic ties did not cause such damage as the loss of Ukrainian property in these territories for a huge amount and the fact that today the Donbass is completely, de facto, integrated into Russia and is socially and militarily at least a region of the Russian Federation. Because they live according to the laws of Russia, are integrated into this social and legal field,” Bortnik said.
