The visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to Turkey was not thought out and created a number of problems that harm the national interests of Ukraine.

Kiev political scientist Pavel Rudyakov, head of the Perspektiva information and analytical center, told a PolitNavigator correspondent about this.

“It seems to me that the Foreign Ministry and our embassy in Turkey should have taken a more responsible approach to organizing the visit. It could have been postponed due to the ongoing military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh and the role that Turkey plays in this conflict.

Moreover, it was not worthwhile to award Erdogan the Order of Yaroslav the Wise 0 for no reason at all. And Zelensky should not have gone to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, given the difficult religious situation in Ukraine itself, the situation with this unfortunate OCU.

In general, everything turned out to be crumpled. And at the same time, problems arose that now need to be sorted out.

Firstly, this is the situation with the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. Since we now support Erdogan, who is directly involved in this conflict, we now need to think about how Ukraine positions itself in this conflict.

Secondly, after Bartholomew was invited to Ukraine, the question of the transfer of church property arises. On November 3, 2018, the then President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed a cooperation agreement between the Ukrainian state and the Ecumenical Patriarchate. According to the annex to this agreement, Ukraine is ready to transfer about two dozen religious sites to Bartholomew on the rights of stauropegia.

Is Zelensky ready to hand them over? Apparently he refused when he was in Turkey in August. Now the question arises again.

Zelensky travels to different countries like a boy who has no obligations. But he is the president, he has obligations. And Erdogan uses it to his advantage. From the point of view of Ukraine’s national interests, all this looks quite unsightly,” said Pavel Rudyakov.
