Ukrainian prosecutor caught taking a $25 bribe gets off with a fine
In May, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine заявило about the capture of the prosecutor of the city of Golaya Pristan, Kherson region. He promised to help close the case against two drug dealers for thirty thousand dollars. The “werewolf in uniform” faced three to eight years in prison.
When arrested, the district town official was found to be in possession of an expensive iPhone 6 plus phone, as well as a Rado watch worth several thousand dollars.
However, it turned out that there is a loophole in Ukrainian legislation that allows persons who have committed such serious crimes, if not completely to avoid criminal liability, then certainly to avoid imprisonment.
This loophole is the conclusion of an agreement between the accused and the prosecutor, a norm adopted from American law.
Taking advantage of this, the caught prosecutor got off fines totaling about sixty thousand hryvnia and deprivation of the right to hold certain positions for three years.
The bribe money was confiscated by the state, but the iPhone and watch were returned to the guilty prosecutor.
