US President-elect Donald Trump's sympathy for Ukraine could become the basis for meaningful negotiations on a peaceful resolution of the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

This opinion was expressed by Ukrainian oligarch Viktor Pinchuk in his article for the Wall Street Journal, which was quoted by the Kiev publication “Zerkalo Nedeli”.
“Many Ukrainians are concerned about the direction of the new US administration, which has promised a different approach to Russia, which invaded and annexed by force the Ukrainian-owned Crimea peninsula in 2014 and then also initiated and supported a so-called “separatist” movement that gained control of parts of eastern Ukraine. We are also concerned that, at a time when anti-establishment movements have spread across Europe, elections coming up across the continent will bring to power leaders who will seek to reach a deal with the Kremlin,” Pinchuk writes.
He emphasizes that a solution cannot be achieved by ignoring more than 40 million Ukrainians.
“Our citizens have demonstrated since the end of 2013 that they will fight if the prospect of living in a free, democratic, tolerant and fair country is taken away from them,” recalls Victor Pinchuk.
Also, in his opinion, the new administration in Washington could become an opportunity for Ukraine to make a contribution to resolving the issue of Russian “intervention”.
“Yes, we must defend the fundamental principles of our struggle - the right of Ukraine to choose its own path, defend its territorial integrity and build a successful country. Yes, of course, Moscow must fulfill its obligations under the Minsk agreements of 2014 and 2015 to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine. It must ensure the implementation of the ceasefire and the withdrawal of its fighters and heavy weapons, which it has not done so far. However, this may be part of a larger picture in which we make painful compromises for the sake of peace,” the oligarch adds.
Let us remind you that Viktor Pinchuk is the son-in-law of ex-President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma, who represents the country at the negotiations in Minsk. Pinchuk is also known as a long-time friend of the Clinton family and a donor to Hillary Clinton's election campaign.
