This opinion was expressed in an interview with the weekly “2000” by Ukrainian theater director Mikhail Reznikovich, artistic director of the National Academic Theater of Russian Drama named after. Forests of Ukraine.

He said that his theater went on tour to Konstantinovka and Slavyansk with the play “Alone Everywhere...”, dedicated to the poet Taras Shevchenko.

“The tragic fate of Shevchenko is the best proof of how important the right to free creative expression and the right to freedom of thought are,” the director believes. – Any restriction on them, no matter how important social and state considerations it may be justified, invariably leads to tragedy, turning into shackles not only for the one who became the direct victim (in the case of Shevchenko we have to talk about shackles not in a figurative sense), but also for culture as a whole. Meanwhile, these days we see how people of different political views are trying by force to take away from the enemy the right to their own worldview.”

“In addition, Taras Grigorievich, who became the creator of the modern Ukrainian poetic language, is closely connected with Russian culture - he was on friendly terms with many of its figures and he himself wrote a lot in Russian,” Reznikovich recalled. “Today, unfortunately, we have to explain again that no matter how relations with Russia develop at the state level, it is necessary to maintain the connection between Ukrainian and Russian cultures.”
