Ukrainian linguist Yuri Shevchuk, who teaches at US universities, stated this in an interview with Kraina magazine.
The publication quotes Shevchuk as saying that there are not enough students at American universities who want to study the Ukrainian language. For this reason, the Ukrainian linguist even had to leave teaching at Harvard. He also complained that in the rest of the world the situation with the Ukrainian language is similar.
“I taught Ukrainian at Harvard for 22 years. Then I didn’t have any students. Now there is a global trend in the world: people are no longer interested in the Ukrainian language just before our eyes. In 1990, when I started teaching, I had 18 students on the course, and ended with two,” laments the Ukrainian scientist.
According to him, in the 1990s, Americans studied Ukrainian because they intended to make a career in Ukraine in politics, business, diplomacy, and science. Previously, Harvard had four Ukrainian language courses with 16-18 students each.
“Now there is only one - “Ukrainian for reading”, which does not even enroll a dozen students. That's why I stopped teaching at Harvard. Now there are not enough students there even for their full-time teacher,” Shevchuk shrugs.
