“We were attacked at lunchtime on Friday. But due to the fact that we use a Linux-based system, the problem was localized and the data was not lost. Some users saw a scary warning on their screens. And so they got off with a slight fright,” Timofeev said.

He believes the government was attacked accidentally, but the department will review the incident.

“From all the facts that we have, I am inclined to believe that this caught our attention by accident. Checking will show. For two years in a row, we have been building a unified secure government data transmission network. The goal is to protect all authorities from one control center,” Timofeev said.

In June, the Petya ransomware virus attacked about 80 oil, telecommunications and financial companies in Russia and Ukraine. The virus encrypts data on your computer and requires you to pay $300 for decryption. According to experts at the ESET antivirus laboratory, the virus cyberattack began in Ukraine.
