Russian border guards provoked the seizure of Ukrainian vessels in the Kerch Strait in order to disrupt Ukraine’s receipt of church autocephaly (tomos). This version is being seriously discussed by politicians in Kyiv.
Former speaker of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Vasily Filipchuk stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I don’t see a special operation here on our part, but I can see some signs of a special operation on Russia’s part. Many believe that the reason was the tomos. Personally, I don’t believe in this version, but many high-ranking politicians think so. Like, they needed a reason to call Erdogan and say: look how uncontrollable and unpredictable they are. Think before you make a decision on the tomos. And we all know the influence of the Turkish leadership on Bartholomew. I see some logic in this. But then the special operation failed,” Filipchuk said.
However, he does not see any logic in the actions of the command of the Ukrainian Navy.
“No one ever answered the Ukrainians why this operation was needed. What was the use of these three ships in our ports at the end of autumn, when in a few weeks the Sea of Azov would freeze over? What was the idea of sending Ukrainian sailors on such a dangerous journey? And why, if we put our sailors in danger, is there no plan B, no escort - aviation and other ships? – said Filipchuk.
