The Ukrainian language gives Ukraine an advantage over Russia, - writer’s version
Russia lives with a distorted past, and Ukraine lives with thoughts about the future. This opinion was expressed in an interview with the Kyiv magazine Focus by the Russian writer Andrei Dmitriev, who has lived in Kyiv for several years.

“Ukraine, no matter what stupid politicians, including stupid intellectuals, say, is a bilingual country,” the writer emphasizes, answering the question about the advantages of Ukraine over Russia. – Almost everyone is bilingual. This is colossal wealth. Orientation, on the one hand, towards Europe, with excellent knowledge of Russian culture, and on the other hand, an orientation towards the development of one’s own. Russians do not know the Ukrainian language, they do not know Ukrainian culture, but Ukrainians know both their culture and Russian. This is their advantage. It is no coincidence that Brodsky said that two languages are an absolutely necessary norm for any enlightened person.”
The writer also explained that by advantage he means the chance given to Ukraine, which, in his opinion, Russia does not have.
“Even with the habitual disbelief in the present, Ukraine lives with the thought or feeling of the future, which is absolutely not the case in Russia,” believes Andrei Dmitriev. – Russia in its thoughts has been thrown back into a distorted past. She doesn’t think about tomorrow at all, it simply doesn’t exist for her.”
