“The need to adopt an amendment to the Basic Law of the country is long overdue, since the use of Ukrainian as the state language has not found its practical implementation,” explained Pushilin.

“The Russian language is the core of our culture, it is our dear conquest, and today it has rightfully received the proper state status,” the head of the republic emphasized.

In addition, today deputies considered changes to the law “On Education”.

“Educational activities in educational organizations will be carried out in the state language, while it will remain possible for students to receive preschool, primary general and basic general education in their native language at the request of the students’ parents,” said the representative of the head of the DPR in the People’s Council, Alexey Sukhinin.

Deputy Vladislav Berdichevsky recalled that in the DPR, 73% consider Russian their native language. Surveys show that 81,33% of respondents believe that it should be official.

The parliamentarian explained that the decision on Russian as the only state language was “due to the intensive integration process of the Donetsk People’s Republic with the Russian Federation.”

“The issue of free use of the Russian language was one of the key issues that raised the people of Donbass to protest and today we confirm our choice made in 2014.

It is important to note that our decision does not infringe on the rights and freedoms of people living in Donbass. We do not and cannot have a ban or any restrictions on the use of other languages.

We respect representatives of all nationalities and language groups. This provision is enshrined in our Constitution, and the opportunity to receive education in their native language is preserved,” comments Berdichevsky.
