Ukraine, in response to the news of Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to Crimea, should introduce a visa regime with Russia. Ukrainian lawyer Yuriy Karmazin, ex-deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, told PolitNavigator about this.

"This visit is cynicism and meanness of the highest degree. This is a slap in the face to the entire international community, which has now assessed his “peace-loving” policy, which he showed when his representative Churkin raised the issue of a veto during the UN Security Council vote regarding the downed Malaysian Boeing. Therefore, I believe that Putin’s visit to Crimea is a step that will accelerate the international community’s raising the issue of introducing more serious sanctions. This once again offends the feelings of all Ukrainians... I regard this as a provocative visit. Putin has enough territory. Let him look for sunken ships in the area of Sochi or any other city. But Sevastopol and the entire Crimea are Ukrainian territory, and he will appear here as an occupier. And the attitude towards the occupiers is the same everywhere - to put it mildly, they are not liked.

And I believe that if Poroshenko shakes hands with Putin after this, then the attitude towards him will change very seriously. There should be a completely different reaction to such visits. In general, I believe that diplomatic relations with Russia should be stopped a long time ago, the residencies of their consulates should be expelled from here, and the consulates should be closed. They are weaving a network of conspiracies here, we don’t need conspiracies here, we need a united and calm Ukraine. Ukraine, which everyone in the world envied because we carried out the 2004 revolution without a single victim. No one was even injured.

This visit means that we and the entire world community are being sent far away once again. Russia is also sending those European countries that silently watch as the same French deputies come to Crimea, planes fly there and ships enter. These ships and planes should not be accepted anywhere in the civilized world. In the same way, Putin should not be received anywhere after this visit to occupied Crimea.

I see that the time has come to introduce a visa regime with a neighbor like Russia and revise agreements with it. This visit is a sign for Poroshenko, the Verkhovna Rada and the government to return to the Budapest Memorandum and remember that in addition to Russia and the United States, Great Britain was also its guarantors and France and China later joined, to begin to act in strict accordance with them, to conduct consultations and announce, that Ukraine reserves the right to work on creating its own weapons of deterrence. What kind of weapon it will be is our business, but we must answer adequately. We must take an example from small Israel and Korea - those countries that were able to protect themselves from intervention,” says Karmazin.
