The Ukrainian public continues to react to yesterday’s scandalous decision of the Kiev City Council to rename the Avenue named after General Vatutin in the capital into the Avenue named after SS Hauptmann Roman Shukhevych. In particular, the famous financial investigator and TV presenter Alexander Dubinsky decided to speak out.

“Excuse me, but have you already decided when they will demolish the monument to Vatutin in Kyiv? There is simply no better place to install a bust of Hitler. And it will be convenient for the leaders to lay flowers. Everyone is not far from the Gestapo,” – he ironically commented on the decision of the Kyiv deputies.

In comments under Dubinsky’s post, Kiev lawyer Anatoly Bashlovka clarified that the monument to Vatutin in Mariinsky Park is not being demolished because under it is the grave of the Soviet military leader who liberated Kyiv from the Germans and was killed by Bandera militants.

“Vatutin’s grave is in Mariinsky Park, and for this reason the monument is not being demolished. This is impossible. There are a number of international and ethical standards,” he wrote.

However, other users are not so optimistic and point out that ethical standards have never stopped the current Ukrainian and Kyiv authorities from making any decisions.

Let us recall, as PolitNavigator previously reported, the monument to General Vatutin was repeatedly subjected to acts of vandalism by neo-Nazis who threatened to demolish it.
