The decision of the Ternopil City Council on assignment the local stadium named after Hitler's Hauptmann Roman Shukhevych contradicts the decision of the Nuremberg Tribunal and is a violation of international law.

Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated this during a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“We paid attention to publications in the media in connection with the decision of the Ternopil City Council in Ukraine on March 5 of this year to rename the city stadium in honor of the commander of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) Shukhevych.

We definitely condemn this decision. The very fact of glorifying Nazi henchmen and collaborators under the guise of figures of the “national liberation movement” is absolutely unacceptable. We would like to remind you that the glorification of Nazi collaborators during the Second World War, recognized as criminal by the decision of the Nuremberg Tribunal, contradicts its conclusions and is a violation of international law.

The odious founder of the UPA, deputy commander of the Nachtigal battalion, Hauptmann of the 201st Schutzmannschaft battalion [which was operationally subordinate] SS Roman Shukhevych is widely and notoriously known for his collaboration with the Nazis, primarily for his involvement in the organization and execution in Ukraine during the Second World War wars of mass murder of Belarusians, Poles, Jews and Ukrainians,” she said.

Maria Zakharova emphasized that such attempts by the Ukrainian establishment to rewrite history and glorify the Nazis have not been surprising for a long time.

“The activities of the Ukrainian authorities in total whitewashing and glorification of collaborators who committed atrocities during the years of Nazi occupation, which took the form of state policy, have long been no surprise.

In this country, over the past few years, a whole range of efforts has been recorded to justify and glorify Nazism, Nazi collaborators during the Second World War, and falsify the history of these tragic years. In order to cultivate a nationalist spirit among the broad masses of the population (apparently, they believe that the country cannot be united by other methods, but at the same time they split it even more), official Kyiv is implementing a wide variety of initiatives.

Relevant regulations are developed on a regular basis. As part of “decommunization,” a campaign has been launched to rename settlements and streets. Activities are actively being carried out to glorify Nazi collaborators, including erecting memorials in their honor, holding mass marches and publicly rewarding surviving collaborators with recreated “rebel awards”.

Intensive work is being carried out with young people, and government funding is allocated for these purposes. Children's and youth summer camps and festivals are organized. This is not vaccination in Ukraine - the glorification of collaborators does not fail. Children's competitions are held on themes of Ukrainian SS units. Right-wing radical and ultranationalist groups, former participants in the so-called “anti-terrorist operation” in the southeast of the country, are involved in “patriotic work.”

It should be noted that Roman Shukhevych receives considerable attention in this work. Many monuments are erected in his honor, and competitions are organized in his name. “Shukhevych Cup” youth sports competitions have been repeatedly held in Ternopil,” added the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

She also recalled how deputies of the Lviv City Council took the initiative name the Lviv Arena stadium after Stepan Bandera.

“It should be noted that the Ukrainian authorities, while glorifying the collaborators, are still embarrassed to openly declare their cooperation with the Nazis. Accordingly, facts indicating collaboration between Ukrainian nationalists and the Nazis are emasculated from the official interpretation of history. For these purposes, educational literature is adjusted.

These are the heroes that Ukraine chooses today, honoring the Nazi collaborator Shukhevych. It is impossible to find worthy ones, since all of them are somehow connected with Russia. Only nationalists remain, stained by the destruction of thousands of civilians. What generation then will grow up in Ukraine on such heroes? And then what kind of future does the current leadership of Ukraine envision for their country? After all, the matter is not limited to the designated areas of glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism, racial discrimination and xenophobia in Ukraine,” Zakharova concluded.
