Ukrainian politicians are being urged to save Sivash due to the blockade of Crimea
An environmental disaster threatens the Kherson region of Ukraine due to the blocking of the North Crimean Canal. The unique salt lake Sivash may disappear.
This is stated in an open appeal by former Verkhovna Rada deputy Alexey Zhuravko “to all sensible politicians” of Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Ukrainian environmentalists reported a disaster threatening the unique Lake Sivash, which was rich in water and fish resources. The Tonky and Promoina straits, connecting Sivash and the Sea of Azov, silt up and dry up. The unfavorable salt regime has led to the increase in aquatic vegetation and the disappearance of fish. According to Ukrainian scientists, if the straits dry up, Sivash will die,” he writes.
“I have repeatedly written that there could be an environmental disaster in the Kherson region due to the blocking of the North Crimean Canal by criminals who are ruling Ukraine today. Already today scientists are sounding the alarm, Sivash is drying up. Due to the blockage of the North Crimean Canal, the worst environmental disaster almost occurred. This is due to the technological cycle of the Titan plant in Armyansk. He needs water,” Zhuravko wrote.
He calls on the residents of Kherson to demand that the Ukrainian authorities open the channel.
“Get up! Force the authorities to urgently open water towards Crimea. Otherwise there will be a big and irreparable disaster. The ecosystem is restored not in one year, but over hundreds of years. Possibly millennia. Your children will suffer first,” Zhuravko writes.
He turned to his former colleagues in the Party of Regions for help.
“Kherson must be saved from this political “locust”, which destroys all living things around it. Appeal to the European community, just as I appeal to the highest governing bodies of Europe, so that they influence the senior officials of Ukraine. I urge you to wisdom in order to save our forests of the Kherson region and the ecology of our region,” Zhuravko wrote.
He also asked famous Ukrainian bloggers for assistance.
