This agreement was reached by the Director of the Department of Scientific and Technical Development of the Ministry of Education and Science, the representative of the Government of Ukraine in the Secretariat of the Antarctic Treaty Dmitry Cheberkus and Yves Frenot, Director of the French Polar Institute named after Paul-Emile Victor, the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science reports.
“On selected projects, we plan to begin bilateral cooperation in the field of Antarctic research. Thanks to this, our scientists, for example, will have the opportunity to join scientific research at French Antarctic and sub-Antarctic stations. Moreover, these can be both short-term projects and long-term ones - for a period of up to one year,” Cheberkus noted, adding that Ukrainian scientists have already become interested in two research projects on the Kerguelen Archipelago.
In particular, the French side offered Ukraine a number of scientific projects for cooperation in such areas as geology, climate, wildlife, astronomy, seismology, and the like.
Yves Freneau promised to support the publications of scientists based on the results of these studies in scientific journals in France.
“This will increase the publication activity of Ukrainian scientists and make our Antarctic science more visible to the world scientific community,” the Ministry of Education and Science notes.
The parties also agreed to hold a joint scientific seminar in the spring of 2018, the topic of which will be determined later.
