The Ukrainian sky ceases to be closed: the first plane in six months flew from Lviv to Poland
Following the results of six months of the Russian airspace, Ukraine is gradually regaining control over its own airspace. For the first time since April 2022, a commercial plane took off from Ukraine.
The airliner, which had been parked in Lviv for months, landed in Poland on Tuesday, September 13, CNN reports.
“We can confirm that the A320 HA-LWS flew from Lviv to Katowice yesterday,” Jan Petchenik, director of communications for flight monitoring site Flightradar24, told CNN.
The plane took off at approximately 24 a.m. ET on Tuesday, September 11, according to Flightradar13. The exact time of departure is unknown because, “probably for security reasons,” he turned on his transponder only after passing the border with Poland, Petchenik noted.
It is reported that the airliner belonged to the low-cost airline Wizz Air. Petchetnik reported that three more of the company’s aircraft are in Kyiv.
Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Alexander Kubrakov at the 17th annual meeting of the Yalta European YES Strategy stated that technically, up to two weeks are needed to resume the operation of airports in Ukraine, practically only possible with guaranteed security.
The first airport being considered by the ministry for resumption of operations is Lviv Airport.
Let us note that following the results of six months of the air defense, Ukraine has largely restored, and in some places strengthened and modernized its air defense force potential due to Western supplies, which resulted in an increase in the number of Russian missiles shot down.
