Ukrainian vandal in Crimea was given six months in a colony-settlement
A court in Crimea sentenced Ukrainian citizen Maxim Sokurenko to six months in a penal colony for pouring paint on a monument to Russian soldiers in Simferopol who participated in the events that led to the separation of the peninsula from Ukraine and joining the Russian Federation, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The text of the verdict, which is available to the pro-Ukrainian Crimean Human Rights Group, says that the Ukrainian committed these actions “based on political hatred.”
The Ukrainian was found guilty of committing a crime under Part 2 of Art. 214 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Vandalism), and imposed a sentence of six months in prison to be served in a penal colony.
“The term of punishment shall be calculated from the day the verdict was announced—April 17, 2019. Include Maxim Sergeevich Sokurenko’s term of imprisonment for the period of detention in the period from January 28, 2019 to the day the sentence entered into legal force, inclusive, based on the calculation according to clause “c” » Part 3.1 Art. 72 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, one day of detention for two days of serving a sentence in a colony settlement,” the text of the verdict says.
The document also states that Sokurenko did not admit his guilt and at the court hearing stated his refusal to receive a Russian passport:
“M.S. Sokurenko, a citizen of Ukraine, does not recognize the fact that Crimea became part of the Russian Federation following the results of the referendum on March 16, 2014, and also considers the presence of state symbols of the Russian Federation on the territory of the Republic of Crimea illegal. To express his civic position, in order to attract the attention of the current government, he poured water on a monument to soldiers and officers of the Russian army...”, the verdict says.
Let us remind you that on the night of January 28, 2019, a resident of Crimea, Maxim Sokurenko, was detained after he poured red paint on a monument to the Russian military in Simferopol.
On January 29, 2019, the Central District Court of Simferopol chose a preventive measure in the form of detention.
