Turkcell now controls a majority stake in life:) in the amount of 55% through the Dutch holding company Euroasia Telecommunications Holding BV.
RBC Capital Markets telecom analyst San Dillon calls Turkcell's move a smart strategy to increase the company's likelihood of making the transition to 3G. He values Turkcell's shares in Astelit at $393 million.
In February, Astelit won a 3G (UMTS) license in the first lot at the auction, paying the largest amount in the auction - UAH 3,355 billion. The company has already launched the first 3G networks in Lviv and Kyiv.
A share in life:) may go to the Turks for operating debts.
As already reported, in 2012, Astelit and related structures experienced a series of defaults on debts to banks and a subsidiary of the Turkish holding Financell. As a result, Turkcell, which owns a 55% stake in life:), received all the operator’s property as collateral, including bank accounts.
Turkcell also began negotiations on the purchase of Ukrtelecom’s 3G division, Trimob. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2015.
Let us remind you that two other Ukrainian mobile operators, MTS-Ukraine and Kyivstar, belong to Russian companies.
