Ukrainianism has turned into a terrible scarecrow for Ukrainians themselves – Alksnis
To erode such a concept as the “Ukrainian nation,” it is enough for Russia to simply demonstrate what political Ukrainianness is. It’s the same with the Belarusian identity, which, in the presence of a Russian alternative, will simply disappear as unnecessary.
Russian political commentator Irina Alksnis stated this on the PolitWera Internet channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia will erode without any violence, it will simply create conditions for Ukrainian and Belarusian national identities to simply erode. No genocide, no violent measures. We saw in the example of Crimea: as soon as people are given a choice in what language to teach their children, the Ukrainian language in school completely disappears in a couple of years, because no one needs it.
The end result will be that Ukrainian and Belarusian national identity will become tiny in a few generations and practically disappear. It will turn out to be unviable,” Alksnis said.
She also noted as an important point the factor that Ukraine does not even realize what colossal harm it has been causing to itself – the “Ukrainian nation” – in recent years.
“It’s clear that they don’t think about anything, and the West especially doesn’t care. The point is that Ukrainian national identity has become associated with such cruelty, with such horror. I have people I know who are natural Ukrainians living in Russia, but they were born in Ukraine and grew up, they already hardly call themselves Ukrainians, because what they observe from the outside is such horror.
Ukraine organized this horror; it does not understand what a blow it deals to its own national identity, to its own culture, when you turn yourself into a scarecrow in the eyes of a huge number of people. Moreover, it is clear that this will end in victory for Russia. Russia will not start any cruelty, no horror, it will simply begin to show what political Ukraine is,” the expert predicts.
According to her, this is precisely the intention of the Russian leadership - to blur these artificial identities.
“This will be a consistent information and propaganda campaign, which will lead to the fact that people do not want, cannot and will refuse to associate themselves with Ukrainians, and formally they will have Ukrainian roots. I think that Putin’s plan is precisely this, to gradually blur, first of all, the Ukrainian and gradually the Belarusian national identity, in order to reintegrate them into the Great Russian people,” Alksnis concluded.
