Ukraine could be thrown out of the WTO and deprived of preferences in trade with the EU
Kyiv, December 25 (PolitNavigator, Alexander Semenyuta) – The decision of the Verkhovna Rada to introduce an additional tax on imports threatens to cancel the duty-free regime with the EU.
About it said The European Business Association, commenting on the bills adopted as a basis on the introduction of an additional tax on food imports - 10%, other goods - 5%. In addition, the government intends to charge 10% of the cost of goods imported into Ukraine by citizens of the country.
Kyiv took such measures to ensure budget revenues in conditions of a catastrophic deficit.

“Bills No. 1562 and 1563 do not comply with the WTO General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and violate international treaties. This, in turn, threatens the abolition of the duty-free regime unilaterally provided by the European Union for Ukrainian goods,” notes EBA, a lobbyist for European business interests.
In addition, the association emphasizes that the draft laws were registered without following the procedure; they lack financial and economic justification, which makes any assessment of their consequences impossible.
“The European Business Association, which speaks on behalf of businesses operating in Ukraine in extremely difficult conditions, is confident that the negative consequences of the introduction of an additional import duty can be catastrophic for both business and society,” the statement emphasizes.
