Ukraine has been hit by a wave of non-payments for utilities
The debt of the Ukrainian population for housing and communal services continues to grow rapidly.
Kiev economist Viktor Skarshevsky writes about this on his Facebook page.
“As I predicted, after the November increase in natural gas tariffs for the population by 23%, the population’s debt for housing and communal services continued to increase rapidly. According to today's data from the State Statistics Service, in December 2018, the population's debts increased by UAH 7,9 billion and reached a record level in the entire history of Ukraine's independence - UAH 55,6 billion (including debts for electricity). In just 2 months – November and December 2018 – the debt increased by UAH 15,7 billion, or 1,4 times,” the expert noted.
He points out that compared to 2018, the percentage of payments for housing and communal services decreased by 1,5 times.
“In total, in 2018, the population’s debt for housing and communal services increased by UAH 23,3 billion, or 1,7 times. If we take into account that heating tariffs have also increased since January 2019 (by an average of 18-20%), and natural gas tariffs are planned to increase from May 2019 (by 15%), then we can say that the snowball of debts will continue to grow - predicts Skarshevsky. “Against this background, against the backdrop of a rapid increase in debt, the government says that subsidies have been provided to everyone who needs them.
