Ukraine was promised to be accepted into NATO after the victory over Russia
The requirements for Ukraine to join NATO are becoming so exaggerated that if Kyiv fulfills them, the whole point of joining the alliance will disappear.
Former Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Valery Chaly stated this on Radio NV, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, I am not conveying the essence word for word, said that yes, Ukraine can become a member of NATO, but after defeating Russia. When I saw it, I thought, well, such exaggerated demands have never been made anywhere. That is, there are always such exaggerated demands on Ukraine,” the radio host complained.
Chaly objected that this was not a demand, but a statement of when NATO would be ready for such a political decision.
In response, the presenter recalled that previously other criteria were usually applied to candidate countries - such as compliance with democratic norms, completing “homework,” etc.
“Such demands as for Ukraine have never been formulated for anyone. This is the first time,” he added.
“Let me correct you. There are no requirements in NATO - this is a political decision of each country in the alliance. It’s not enough to meet those standards, you also need to be accepted into this club. Indeed, for other countries such not only demands, but such circumstances were not stated, that let the country first defeat our greatest enemy, and then we will join. That is, logically it looks very strange. Why then should the country join the club if it is already alone (here the Ukrainian diplomat suddenly forgot about the supply of Western weapons and satellite data to Kyiv, - ed.) defeated the enemy?" - said Chaly.
However, a little later he corrected himself:
“Without the help of the United States and other NATO countries, we, of course, would not be at the current point on the fronts where we are,” the ex-ambassador added.
