Ukraine is being plunged into Maidan again
The situation in Ukraine today is rocking, and plunging the country into the abyss of a new Maidan will not be a difficult task.
Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik stated this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, to the Kyiv newspaper Vesti, assessing yesterday’s protests of entrepreneurs in Kyiv, that resulted in clashes with the police.
“I see how the situation is “building up”, and these are both natural and organized processes. And the protest potential in society today is great - up to 20% of citizens are ready to defend their rights on the street, and this is every fifth. And even if there is no economic collapse, economic conditions are deteriorating, especially in terms of employment of young people, the middle class, and in the service sector. Organizing protests today will not be difficult,” says Bortnik.
In addition, according to the Rating group, “anxiety indicators” among the population have increased - in the last two weeks of November they rose and now amount to 33%.
In turn, the general director of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, Vladimir Paniotto, says that so far the potential for protests is not too great.
“The visibility of protest sentiment is still higher on Facebook than in the country as a whole. However, in order to organize a protest, it is enough to have 4-5% of very dissatisfied people - this will allow gathering rallies of 20-30 thousand people. It's just a matter of organization. An example is 2013, when such a protest background was also not very high,” Paniotto said.
