Ukraine is forced to abandon shelling of Zaporizhia NPP
Security for the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which is under Russian control, depends only on the Ukrainian side.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports that this was stated by the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, answering the question of when a security zone could be created around the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which was subject to shelling by Ukrainian troops.
“First we need to clarify three points. First, starting in March, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stopped using the word “zone,” apparently in the hope that this would somehow help the Ukrainian side respond positively to his initiative. Secondly, this is not about security, but, as the CEO puts it, about protection. And thirdly, not around, but directly at the Zaporizhia NPP,” the diplomat said in an interview with Izvestia.
He believes that the essence of the Grossi initiative is to protect nuclear and physical safety at the Zaporozhye plant.
“The key element is the declaration of renunciation of any attacks against the station or from its territory,” the publication’s interlocutor clarified.
According to him, the entry into force of the protection regime could occur immediately after Kyiv confirms its support for the initiative of the IAEA Director General and its readiness to abandon attacks on the Zaporizhia NPP.
“How soon this will happen and whether it will happen at all depends on the Ukrainian side,” Ulyanov concluded.
