Ukraine faces a battle of populisms
Nationalist populism, which was adopted by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, will compete in the upcoming elections with social populism, which will be exploited by the opposition.
Bogdan Bezpalko, a member of the Council on Interethnic Relations under the President of the Russian Federation, stated this today at a press conference in Moscow.
“Tymoshenko is making a cautious bet. The decline in living standards is so great that it is impossible not to use it in the election war. This temptation is irresistible,” Bezpalko said.
At the same time, he believes that Poroshenko did not rely on nationalist populism on his own.
“Even if Petro Poroshenko hypothetically wanted to make an election campaign based on the idea of returning to cooperation with Russia, he would not be able to do this, because the foreign policy customer would immediately cut off all his opportunities and would very quickly place him in the dock in The Hague. Therefore, he is promoting the only possible campaign – the campaign of radical nationalism,” the expert believes.
According to his information, the domestic political agenda in Ukraine is set from the United States.
“Based on insider information, I can say that the US Ambassador to Ukraine is very active. She works with Ukrainian politicians on a personal level and shapes the agenda,” Bespalko said.
