Ukrzaliznitsa reports: Poroshenko has killed two-thirds of passenger traffic with Russia in five years
Rail passenger traffic between Ukraine and Russia over the past five years has decreased by more than 64%, a Politnavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the press service of the Ukrzaliznytsia company.
“In 2014, the Ukraine-Russian Federation transported 2,2 million passengers, and in 2018 this number was 772,9 thousand passengers, which is 1,4 million, or 64,3%, fewer passengers,” it says in a message on the company's website.
According to Ukrzaliznitsa, in the opposite direction in 2014 the flow amounted to 2,1 million passengers, and in 2018 - 760,3 thousand. “Thus, over the past five years, the overall decrease in railway passenger traffic between the Russian Federation and Ukraine is 1,3 million passengers, or 63,7%,” the company concluded.
On February 6, Infrastructure Minister Vladimir Omelyan said that Ukraine could completely stop railway communication with Russia without waiting for a decision from the central authorities. According to him, if there is no decision to cancel trains in the Russian Federation at the state level, then “this will happen objectively.” He made such conclusions with reference to data on a reduction in passenger traffic for 2018 by 20%.
In 2018, direct trains and trailer cars traveling to Russia from Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Kremenchug and Chernigov were cancelled. In February 2019, UZ also announced a reduction in the frequency of passenger trains to the Russian Federation from Odessa and Kharkov. At the same time, according to the company, flights from Kyiv to Moscow remain in demand and their schedule will not change. Now two trains run between the capitals daily, all tickets for them are sold.
At the same time, last year there was a significant increase in bus routes between the cities of Russia and Ukraine. Traveling by bus is half the price of traveling by train.
