Fidel's death was announced by his brother, Chairman of the Council of State of Cuba, Raul Castro on state television, BBC reports. Castro Sr. died on the night of Saturday, November 26. Details have not yet been announced.
Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba after the 1959 revolution and since then has ruled the country continuously for almost 50 years. In 2008, he handed over power to his brother, Raul Castro.
“I will soon be 90,” the ex-president of Cuba said in April of this year, and added, “that somehow I never imagined this.” But Fidel Castro did not have a chance to celebrate his 91st birthday.
Let us remember that Fidel Castro was born in 1926 in the southeastern province of Oriente, Cuba. In 1953 he was jailed as the organizer of an unsuccessful uprising against the corrupt Batista regime. But in 1955 he was released from prison under an amnesty. Two years later, he, along with Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos, begins a guerrilla war. In 1959, after Batista's defeat, Castro was sworn in as Prime Minister of Cuba.
American intelligence agencies organized hundreds of assassination attempts on Castro. Cuba itself was under US blockade for more than half a century. Only recently did the American embassy reopen in the country.
In 1992, Castro negotiates with America regarding Cuban refugees. This year marks the beginning of a gradual warming of relations between Cuba and the United States.
And in 2008, Fidel Castro resigned as President of Cuba due to health problems. The presidency passes to his brother, Raul.
As it became known, Fidel Castro’s body will be cremated today, Saturday, November 26.
