This was reported by the press bureau of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation.
Kozlov was 80 years old, of which he devoted more than half a century to intelligence. In the late 1970s, he reported to the center about South Africa's nuclear program. The Soviet authorities made this information public, and South Africa was forced to curtail its nuclear research.
In 1980, as a result of betrayal, Kozlov was arrested. “Alexei Mikhailovich courageously withstood the most severe torture, remaining faithful to his duty and oath. In 1982, he was exchanged for eleven people - ten West Germans and one South African army officer,” the report says.
In 1986, Kozlov was again sent abroad. The SVR employee returned to Moscow only in 1997.
In 2000, Alexei Kozlov was awarded the title of Hero of Russia. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star and “For Services to the Fatherland”, IV degree.
