69-year-old Metropolitan Onuphry (in the world Orest Berezovsky) is a native of the Chernivtsi region, graduated from the Moscow Theological Academy, was dean of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, then sent to Western Ukraine, to Pochaev, where he became the vicar of the Lavra. He is considered the successor of the work of Metropolitan Vladimir, who managed to expand the presence of the UOC-MP.
46-year-old Metropolitan Anthony (Ivan Pakanich) is one of the youngest representatives of the Ukrainian hierarchy; a native of Transcarpathia and also a graduate of the Moscow Theological Academy. He taught there, and in 2002 he asked to be transferred to Ukraine. Became in charge of the office of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. Metropolitan Anthony's youth, according to people around Metropolitan Vladimir, reduces his chances of leading the church.
63-year-old Metropolitan Hilarion (Roman Shukalo) was born in Lvov, graduated from Odessa and Moscow theological seminaries, served in Lugansk, Ivano-Frankovsk and Kherson, then was assigned to Donetsk.
According to the head of the press service of the UOC, Vasily Anisimov, the most realistic candidate remains Metropolitan Onufriy, since “this candidacy suits everyone.” “A metropolitan should be elected who is closer to the old wing of the church than to the young, reformist wing,” says Mr. Anisimov. “Many are ready to vote for Metropolitan Onuphry, but he himself does not seek power. He is a monk and believes that Ukraine's problems can be solved through prayer, not through power. He spoke out against Ukraine’s movement into the European Union, since there “they have moved away from Christ, but we need to stick to those who profess Christ.”
