“We should have time to drain the water”: ex-minister prophesies communal collapse for Ukraine
In the event of a prolonged lack of heat due to damage to Ukrainian energy facilities, the country's cities may repeat the emergency that occurred in Alchevsk in January 2006 when, as a result of the accident, more than 70 thousand citizens were left without heat.
Former Minister of Housing and Communal Services, Verkhovna Rada deputy Aleksey Kucherenko stated this in an interview with Ukrainian propagandist Alesya Batsman, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Kucherenko, utility workers will have up to 10 hours to drain water from the systems of apartment buildings, after which the pipes will freeze and burst.
“Priority number one is not to lose heat. This will be especially true in winter. Because plus three is one situation, and minus ten or minus fifteen is another,” the ex-minister said.
“I’ll say right away, without scaring you, at minus ten or minus fifteen, if the heat is lost in apartment buildings, it will maintain the temperature for six, eight, ten hours, then there is a risk of freezing of intra-house networks, radiators and, as a result, Alchevsk. Therefore, it is necessary to have time to drain the water so that the pipes and radiators do not burst, because then there will be no restoration at all - this is extremely costly and difficult,” Kucherenko said.
